Section 1 - What is EMF ?

Electromagnetic Field (EMF) is a continuous field produced by electrically charged objects such as your cellphones and Wi-Fi. EMF travels in a wave-like pattern at the speed of light and this propagation is called electromagnetic radiation.

Some electromagnetic fields are produced naturally, like the low intensity EMF emitted by our body. However, tech-made EMF — those transmitted by cellphones and Wi-Fi — are unnatural and can cause health risks.

EMF varies based on their propagation: the difference in their wavelengths and frequencies.  High wavelength radiation — like a radio —  have a low frequency and convey small amounts of energy.  Low wavelength radiation have a high frequency and are packed with tremendous energy.

Are cell phone and wifi radiation dangerous?

The higher the frequency, the better the penetration — think X-rays. EMF at this level impair cells and genetic materials. Thus, health risks increase with frequency.

Microwaves have lower frequency but can pose significant health risks in the medium and long term. Cellphones emanate as much EMF as a microwave does. This may be tolerable except for the fact that we usually place our phone in our pockets, right next to our private parts.

In recent years, we’ve been constantly bombarded by radiation from our cellphones, Wi-Fi, and bluetooth, and it’ll only get worse.

Below, you’ll find a list of health risks highlighted by over 100 studies conducted over the past years.

1) ABOUT CANCER

A) NON-IONIZING RADIATION CANCER

A common myth among the public is that non-ionizing radiation cannot cause cancer. This is inexact. Today, there is sufficient scientific evidence of cellular damage caused by non-ionizing radiation that can lead to cancer.

What is true is that ionizing radiation and non-ionizing radiation do not harm our cells the same way as their biological impacts differ. Ionizing radiation generates a high energy that causes the electrons of atoms to dislodge - effectively creating the “ions”, directly damaging to the DNA; whereas non ionizing radiation interferes with the oxidative repair mechanisms, creating oxidative stress that can lead to cancer.
The oxidative stress caused by non-ionizing radiation increases free radicals and studies show that free radicals cause cancer.

“While Ionizing Radiation directly damages DNA, Non Ionizing Radiation interferes with the oxidative repair mechanisms resulting in oxidative stress, damage to cellular components including DNA, and damage to cellular processes leading to cancer.”

B) TUMORS

Numerous studies show that long term cellphone use and radiation cause a 28% to 52% higher risk of developing cancer such as brain tumor or salivary gland tumor.

C) OXYDATIVE STRESS AND GENOTOXIC EFFECTS

Wireless radiation are found to increase oxidative stress and free radicals in many tissues of the body, which in turns increase the risk of developing cancer in the long run.

2) REPRODUCTIVE HARM

Long-term exposure to cellphone radiation leads to a strong decrease in sperm count (up to 50% for men keeping their cellphone in the pocket for more than 4 hours per day).

The sperm quality is also impacted, decreasing sperm motility, velocity, viability and normal morphology.

3) CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE

The oxidative stress that can be generated by wireless radiation may contribute to cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death in the US.

4) COGNITIVE AND MEMORY EFFECT

Numerous studies found that EMF exposure leads to affected brain functions such as memory, learning, cognition, attention and behavioral problems.

5) CHILDREN AND PERINATAL EXPOSURE

Cell phone use by pregnant women may be associated with lower birth weight, birth emergency and behavioral problems in the children.

More cell phone radiation is absorbed by children's inner brain tissues than adults, so their exposition should appropriately be reduced.

6) EFFECTS ON TESTOSTERONE

Cell phone radiation leads to reduction in testosterone levels. This can for instance impact athletics performances. Olympic athlete coach Charles Poliquin was notoriously avoiding carrying his cell phone in his pocket because of it lowers testosterone levels.

7) CELL GROWTH AND PROLIFERATION

The cell viability and proliferation significantly reduces when exposed to cellphone radiation at a 7 inches distance for over 6 minutes per day.

“The proliferation rates of human ADSCs (AdiposeDerived Stem Cells) in all exposure groups (6 to 21 min/day for 5 days at 20 cm distance from the antenna of the phone) were significantly lower than control groups (P<0.05) except in the group of 6 minutes/ day.”

“The results show that 900 MHz RF signal radiation from antenna can reduce cell viability and proliferation rates of human ADSCs regarding the duration of exposure. Section 4 - Laws and Public Health Implications

Over 30 countries have passed laws and taken steps in order to l imit the public’s exposure to EMF radiation and increase the public awareness around its different health dangers. Here are a few laws, ordinance and recommendation that were passed in the US over the past few years.

2015 – Berkeley Adopted the Cell Phone “Right to Know” Ordinance

Cell phone retailers now have to provide an educational sheet for cell phone buyers to learn about the cell phone’s minimum separation distance from the body (varying depending on cellphone models, but usually around 0.6 inch).

2014 – Wireless Router Labeling in all Suffolk, NY Public buildings:

Sponsored by physician W. Spencer, this resolution have all county public building posting “Notice: Wireless technology in use” when wireless routers are in use, due to their emission of radio frequency radiation or microwave radiation.

2011 – A Passed Ordinance by the City of San Francisco required cell phone retailers to distribute an educational sheet

The ordinance required cell phone retailers to provide an educational sheet to inform on radiofrequency emission from cell phone and how consumers can minimize their exposure.

However, the implementation was blocked after 3 years of court battle due to CTIA suing the city. They settled to block implementation in exchange for a waiver of attorney’s’ fees.

2009 – Los Angeles, California Public Schools Recommends Cautionary Exposure Levels at 10,000 Less than the FCC and bans cell towers on school property and recommends against WiFi.

2017 – Maryland State Children’s Environmental Health And Protection Advisory Council Recommendations For Wired Internet In Schools and Minimizing RF Classrooms:

The Maryland State Children’s Environmental Health and Protection Advisory Council advised the Department of Education to recommend local school districts provide wired (instead of wireless) internet connections in order to reduce classroom wireless radiation.

Even though governments try to regulate public exposure to electromagnetic waves, the recent scandals show how difficult it is to meet this objective. In 2015, a study carried out by the French National Frequency Agency showed that 9 out of 10 phones exceed the manufacturer's reported radiation test levels when re-tested in positions where the phone is in contact with the body.

For instance, in 2018, the French telephone operator Orange sold over 90.000 cellphones whose Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) exceeded the authorized level. (A. LOUKIL, 2018)

Another relevant example is the one of firms such as BlackBerry or Nokia who warned shareholders about the potential cancer risks of phones, but haven't told customers as they feared to be sued. (C. DEAN, 2018)

Communicating on EMR and its potential danger remains difficult and some companies are having a hard time being transparent with their customers.
